Realization of True Discipline for Youths with Disabilities

[안병일 글로벌사이버대 겸임교수·행정학박사 @이코노미톡뉴스] The Korea Scout Association holds AGOONOREE and SCOUT DISABILITY COMPREHENSION CAMP every year. Initially named AGOON, a scouting for young people with special needs, AGOONOREE was first developed in the Netherlands just after the Second Wd War. The name AGOONOREE was coined by compounding AGOON, an Arabic word meaning ‘advance’, and OREE from JAMBOREE.

AGOONOREE was first held in Korea in May 1985 at the Central Scout Center of Korea Scout Association and have held 33 camps so far and, and the SCOUT DISABILITY COMPREHENSION CAMP was first held in Korea in August 1999 in a special school Jeongjin Academy and have held 18 camps so far.

In a SCOUT DISABILITY COMPREHENSION CAMP, a youth with disabilities and a youth with no disabilities are paired up to perform scouting activities and develop their potential, social adaptation skills and democratic civic awareness in order to achieve both special and common educational agenda.

Having held since 1985 by the Korea Scout Association for youths with disabilities, AGOONOREE was taken in the 1980s as an innovative and progressive jamboree that honed conviction and will for youths with and without disabilities to live together.

It is viewed by scholars that it was round the 8th Paralympic Games, from Oct. 15-24,1988, when general public in Korea formed a bond of understanding that people with disabilities are also apart of our society.

Considering, it is true that the Korea Scout Association has quickly and proactively realized true discipline for youths, since the 1980s, as the leader in education to materialize holistic view on people demanded by future society and to achieve integrated education and cultivation of healthy and futuristic youths.

Major curriculum of AGOONOREE and SCOUT DISABILITY COMPREHENSION CAMP include scout knotting, outdoor cooking, exploration, play pair, business craftsmanship, pair picture frame, education on understanding of disabilities, experiencing disabilities and more. They are activities that form the social capital for the youths who will be leading the future generations.

These activities are able to deliver will and courage to recharge the life for youths with disabilities and correct any unfitting understanding or awareness against disabilities for youths without disabilities.

Furthermore, the significance of these activities lies in instigation of true discipline and elevated interest in youths with disabilities by youths with and without disabilities camping out together, sharing friendship and obliterating any bias against disabilities.

In addition, they are able to train their body and mind through scouting the Mother Nature, build friendship through exchange, experience sense of accomplishment through various activities and develop their potential to cultivate their faculty as democratic citizens.

Additionally, AGOONOREE have become the touchstone for character education, comprised of activities such as exploring the unknown, conversations and debates with peers and grownups will strengthen individual capacity and fulfill their needs arising from stress, anxiety and incongruity with social norm.

We wish that youths with disabilities are able to grow healthily, and in the future when these youths become the center of our society, they are able to not discriminate against disabilities and accept everyone as who they are and serve as the foundation of our society through the social adaptation skills learned during SCOUT DISABILITY COMPREHENSION CAMP programs by the Korea Scout Association.

Baden Powell, the founder of SCOUT DISABILITY COMPREHENSION CAMP, said, “Scouting is a fun game taking place in Mother Nature. Here, men like boys and actual boys can be brothers exploring to gain health, happiness and utility together.”
