[@EconomyTalk News] The suicide of Jonghyun, a member of popular K-pop group Shinee, is rocking the news cycle at the end of 2017. The K-pop star left a beautiful and sweet will composed just like a poem, which touched the hearts of many. This will, consummating the tragic death of this beautiful youth, invoked sorrow in the public mind, and in the process of parsing through his last words, I found a particularly interesting phrase.
<The depression that was slowly gnawing at my heart engulfed my entire soul,
And I could not beat it.
There is no living person suffering more than I, and no other weaker than I.>
Without having to quote “The Sorrows of Young Werther,” it is well known that suicide comes with a tantalizing scent that seduces youths sulking in broken love and the elderly living in poverty. Many people think about suicide—just the concept or the action—several times in their lifetime. Koreans are especially prone to the thought, having the highest suicide rate in the world. This statistical information is used to support the argument that there is no other place in the world apart from Korea with more inequality and difficulty in life. Such line of reasoning is scary, since they contain the “tantalizing scent of suicide.”
Five years ago, I was pushed to the brink of my existence. When my franchise business, which was at the top of the industry, failed, my family and I went into a downward spiral into poverty. My debt was over one billion Korean won, and my family had no place to live. I am certain that we were at the bottom 0.1 percent of the Korean population. I could not even afford to pay my son’s high school tuition, much less his private lesson fees. My wife bought boxes of rotten vegetables and fruits to extend my family’s miserable life.
My health was even worse. I was extra-obese, weighing over 120 kilograms. I had almost all forms of adult diseases caused by bad life habits, which meant that I could die from even the smallest infection even before I could receive treatment. Every night, my wife asked me if I was okay, worried that her husband would choose to take his life.
I could not die, however, because I did not even have a life insurance to benefit my family after my death. At the time, I believed that there was no one poorer and more unfortunate than I. What kept me from choosing death over life during those trying times was the mental stability, which came from breathing with my belly. The most fundamental cause of disease in modern medicine is stress, and it is well known that belly breathing and meditation are particularly effective in fighting against stress, insomnia, and depression.
In six months, I lost 45 kilograms and regained my normal health, which helped me climb to the top of online reputation management industry and boast my competitiveness. My life changed 180 degrees since then: With healthy life, eating, and exercising habits, I nurtured physical abilities and health in the top one percent. A better lifestyle brought me an outstanding intellectual capacity, which allowed me to pass various exams and read a book every two or three days. For several years, I read and studied countless books and papers on diet, health, neuroscience, depression, and happiness. In this article, I would like to share my small insight on suicide, obtained from my years of research.
People think that I succeeded in losing 45 kilograms and regaining health due to my exceptional self-control, but that is wrong. Diet, health, neuroscience, depression, and happiness have no relation to willpower. It can only obstruct the path to physical and mental health.
It is well known that the suicide rate in Korea is one of the highest in the world. The keyword correlated with suicide is “depression,” which most that take their own life had suffered. Depression is a disease of the mind, which require a psychoanalytic approach. Happiness, then, is the ultimate goal of the human being, regardless of his time and culture. Jesus and Buddha both preached that happiness stems from love and mercy, and many other famous phrases on happiness do not steer far from this observation.
Applying the Marxian theory that the physical substructure determines the psychological superstructure to depression can change the way we view the topic. From a substructural perspective, happiness originates from certain conditions of the body, which include bathing in the sun, breathing with the belly, eating vegetables, smiling often, not abusing antibiotics, and staying away from smartphones. Such a lifestyle can make a person happy in an instant.
In line with this idea, a theory posits that people succumb to depression because of malfunctions in the intestines which is also called the second brain. Modern human beings intentionally avoid the sun, which prevents vitamin D synthesis, in addition to overconsuming carbohydrates, sugar, and antibiotics. All of these actions overwork the intestines. According to a recent study, overconsumption of carbohydrates can cause inflammation in the brain, leading to Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, autopsy, Alzheimer’s disease, and depression.
In conclusion, we must understand that the fundamental cause of happiness and depression may lie in the substructure (the body) and not the superstructure (the mind). It does not cost to recognize this; simply take off a layer of clothes in the sun, stay away from excessive carbohydrates and sugar, use only necessary amounts of antibiotics, and practice belly breaching. This can pull people out of the misunderstanding that they are the only suffering beings, and push them onto the path to happiness. Losing weight to gain a fabulous body, and retrieving a high level of intelligence are bonuses.
People say, “better a live coward than a dead hero.”
Indeed, it is truly better to live than follow the seemingly sweet scent of suicide.
